1-Discovery Of The ABO Blood Group.
It was the Australian Landsteiner in 1900 who discovered blood groups. This achievement represents not only the identification of the first blood group system, but also the recognition of genetic differentiation within our species.
2-Antigen Definition.
An antigen is any substance introduced into an organism capable of causing the appearance of specific reaction factors called antibodies.
3-Four Blood Groups.
— A and B are two antigens which will define four groups.
— Group A if antigen A is the only one present on the subject’s red blood cells.
— Group B if the B antigen is the only one present on the subject’s red blood cells.
— Group AB if both A and B antigens are present on the subject’s red blood cells.
— Group O if none of the A or B antigens are present on the red blood cells. Subjects of group O who have no antigen in the ABO system, on the other hand, have a large quantity of H antigen, which represents the substrate in the previous unconverted system.
4-ABO Blood Group In Relation To Serum.
The ABO blood group is determined by the presence of A and B antigens on the surface of red blood cells, and anti-A or anti-B antibodies in the serum. Thus, red blood cells of blood group A possess the A antigen and the serum containing the anti-B antibody.
Likewise, blood group B has a B antigen and an anti-A antibody. Blood group AB contains both A and B antigens but no antibodies. Blood group O has no antigens, but contains both anti-A and anti-B antibodies.
